Tummelberry (Rubus fruticosus × R. idaeus) is a vigorous hybrid between raspberry and blackberry, developed in 1984 by the Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI). This bramble produces large, round, bright-red berries that resemble raspberries in appearance but carry a juicy, sweet-tart flavor with blackberry-like depth. Tummelberries ripen from mid-July through late August, offering an extended summer harvest that’s ideal for fresh eating, preserves, desserts, or freezing.
Perfect for home gardeners seeking high flavor and low fuss, Tummelberry plants thrive when grown in full sun, with well-draining, fertile soil and regular watering. Though slow to start from seed, they establish quickly from cane cuttings or bare-root canes. Train them along a trellis or fence and prune annually to encourage airflow and maximize yields. Hardy and productive, Tummelberry is a standout choice for berry lovers who want reliable harvests, bold color, and a flavorful twist on the traditional raspberry.
